The CSULB Department of Art has been recognized since the late 1950s as one of the most outstanding university art departments in the Western United States. Currently, it is the largest department on the CSULB campus with more than 2,100 undergraduate and graduate students working toward degrees in Art Education, Art History, Ceramics, Drawing and Painting, Fiber, Illustration, Metal and Jewelry, Museum Studies, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, Wood, Visual Communications.California State University, Long Beach was the first University within the CSU system to offer a B.A. in Dance degree. Today it is the only CSU campus to grant the Master of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Fine Arts in dance (professional degrees), as well as a Master of Arts degree designed for dance educators. The Dance Department has enjoyed steady growth since its inception in 1970, and now has 130 undergraduate dance majors, and 30 graduate candidates.The Department of Design was established to provide an administrative and academic framework for professional design training in the fields of Industrial Design, Interior Architectural Design, and Display/Exhibition Design. Regularly recognized as one of the top design schools in the nation, the CSULB design programs offer unparalleled opportunities for industry collaborations, international travel, prestigious internships and creative growth.The Department of Film and Electronic Arts (FEA) at California State University, Long Beach believes that theory should inform practice and that practice should refine film theory. To that end the department offers two options for majors; one in critical theory including management, regulation, history of film and electronic arts, the other in the production of film and electronic arts. Both options provide opportunities with highly trained scholars, who possess degrees from leading universities, and with professionals from Hollywood, who have extensive experience in production.Since its inception, the California State University, Bob Cole Conservatory of Music has enjoyed a tradition of excellence in the areas of Music Performance and Music Education. Approximately 100 full and part-time faculty members serve the 500 undergraduate and graduate students. Our applied faculty members are not only the finest in the California State University System, but are also the most prolific musicians working in Southern California. More than 20 different performance ensembles provide extensive performance experience for our students.The CSULB theatre program currently serves approximately 250 majors annually and attracts students from across the country. Building on its reputation and the quality of its program, the Department of Theatre Arts in 1984 was selected by the Chancellor's Office to offer one of three MFA degrees in Theatre in the 23-campus California State University system. The Theatre Arts Department is the only program in the CSU system with its own off-campus performance venue — the Edison Theatre in Downtown Long Beach — and its own resident acting company—California Repertory Company.
